Vin Diesel: an action star and a gentleman.

After showing off his vocal range with a cover of Rihanna's "Stay" on Friday, The Fast and the Furious star is revealing the inspiration behind his touching performance (and his re-cut clip, below).

After seeing Rihanna perform the song at the Grammy Awards, Diesel, 45, decided to record himself singing the tune and dedicate it to his longtime girlfriend, Paloma Jimenez, in lieu of a traditional Valentine's Day card.

With the help of his daughter, Diesel obtained a mic and an amp while Jimenez was on a flight and "the rest is history," he tells PEOPLE.

As an action hero Vin Diesel spends his time chasing bad guys and dodging explosions – but in real life he's just happy changing diapers.

The star of the upcoming Babylon A.D. – who welcomed his first child, a daughter, in April with girlfriend Paloma Jimenez – says fatherhood has given him a whole new perspective.

"Someone once told me that, when you have a child, it opens up parts of your heart that you never knew existed. And it is so true," Diesel told Parade magazine. "It's like you have a child and you think, 'Everything that I've done up until this point is insignificant in comparison to being a father.' It's a beautiful, beautiful thing."

Vin Diesel Kids Around

Though the old Hollywood adage says never work with animals or children, Vin Diesel, who costars with a brood of tykes in the hit comedy The Pacifier, disagrees. "I think that it's so inaccurate because when you work with kids, all you have to do is step out of the way and let them shine. It was so easy," he tells us. Easy, but also hard to shake. While filming his next movie, the Sidney Lumet-directed drama Find Me Guilty, "I would be standing on-site rocking back and forth," Diesel recalls. "Sidney said, 'Why are you rocking back and forth? You're (playing) a 48-year-old attorney that's living in prison. Why are you doing this?' I was so accustomed to having a baby that I kept going back and forth like this. I couldn't stop it. I kept doing this like I had a baby on me."
