PEOPLE Review: No Joke – Heath Ledger Makes The Dark Knight Unforgettable

Originally posted 07/16/2008 03:20PM

Step aside, Spider-Man 2 and Superman II: The phenomenal The Dark Knight now reigns as the greatest superhero film of all time. From its exhilarating first frame to its bittersweet last, it sets a new standard for the genre – and redefines what a summer popcorn movie can be.

After starting to clean up corrupt Gotham City by becoming the caped crusader in 2005's Batman Begins, billionaire Bruce Wayne (a superb Christian Bale) has the city's bad guys on their heels. He's joined in the fight against crime by the equally committed district attorney Harvey Dent (Aaron Eckhart) – fated to fall from grace and become the ghastly Two-Face – who is romancing Wayne's old flame Rachel (Maggie Gyllenhaal, a spry upgrade over Batman Begins' Katie Holmes).

The Dark Knight's Christian Bale says he misses co-star Heath Ledger deeply, and that he hopes their movie – the very last one Ledger completed – will be a celebration of his friend's life and work.

"I want to talk about Heath," Bale told this Sunday's issue of PARADE. "When you miss somebody, you want to speak about him. He was a good man, and I was glad to have spent time with him."

Ledger died in a Manhattan apartment in January at the age of 28. His death was later ruled an accidental prescription-drug overdose. Ledger had finished work on The Dark Knight and was still working on The Imaginarium of Dr. Parnassus when he died.

Dark Knight star Christian Bale recalls his costar Heath Ledger as "intense" and "anarchistic" on the set of the set of the late actor's last movie.

"He was incredibly intense in his performance, but incredibly mellow and laid-back. Certainly there was this great anarchistic streak to it – just getting dirtier than anybody's envisioned the Joker before," Bale, 34, tells Details magazine.

Ledger died on Jan. 22 of a prescription-drug overdose at the age of 28. And Bale laments that the film "was something I wanted to share with him – and expected to do so."

Echoing what other friends and co-workers have said about Heath Ledger, Dark Knight star Christian Bale says the late actor was "a joy" to work with.

"You know, I don't like kind of trivializing the tragedy in conjunction with an interview to do with the movie, which is clearly far less important. But Heath was a joy," the actor tells Entertainment Weekly. "He really was like that, because he was a very unique man. I enjoyed watching him work, working with him."

Bale, who plays Batman opposite Ledger's Joker, says that he appreciated his costar's professionalism and dedication to the comic book tale.

Tips on How to Attract Nelly

As Nelly gets ready to perform on the 30th season premiere of Saturday Night Live next week, we felt it was a good time to ask: What makes a girl appealing to you? "I think it's a lot in the way they carry themselves," says the hip-hop star, 29. "A girl has to be different. There are so many beautiful girls around the world, and what separates them from being normal is the way they carry themselves. Whichever one can bring it out in their own way without looking or feeling out of place, you know, they don't look uncomfortable or like they're trying too hard." Don't feel compelled to dress up for him either. "Just anyone who can still look beautiful in a ball cap and sweatpants, T-shirt," he adds. "That's how you know they're beautiful. Anyone can dress up and look good, but can you just look beautiful on a regular day? That's the thing."
