Famous for its old Hollywood glamour and laid-back atmosphere, the venerable hotel – which first opened its doors in 1927 – regularly draws A-listers such as Scarlett Johansson and Robert Pattinson for lunch or dinner on its palm tree-ringed patio. Inside, overstuffed couches crowd the "living room" where even the biggest stars feel like they are among (famous) friends.

Fresh from dinner with friends, Revenge stars and real-life couple Emily VanCamp and Josh Bowman made their way to Chateau Marmont in West Hollywood for the West Coast launch of Carrera 6000 sunglasses.
"Emily seemed in good spirits as Josh playfully placed various shades on her face," an onlooker tells PEOPLE. "His favorite seemed to be a pair of leopard sunglasses, which he said resembled 'the tiger' in her."
Of their earlier dinner date, the source overheard VanCamp say she cooked dinner for the group, but Bowman interjected to note that he "worked the grill."

West Hollywood's Chateau Marmont is a bustling venue, but when Lady Gaga arrived for drinks on Tuesday night, the entire restaurant fell silent.
"While walking back from the bathroom, Gaga stopped in her tracks when she heard a small group of people singing her song 'Edge of Glory,' " an onlooker tells PEOPLE. "The singing was very loud and made all the guests stop their conversation."
Looking into it further, Gaga and her three male companions, who looked like bodyguards, realized the voices were coming from a large group of fans camped out on the other side of the hotspot's wall of hedges.
"Gaga tried to speak to the fans through the wall but the singing was too loud so she had the hedges pulled apart as she stuck her head through the wall," the source says. "She said, 'Guys, it's Gaga,' before the crowd exploded with cheers."
Chatting with the fans for a few minutes while sticking her head through the bush, the insider explains, "Gaga told them she loved them and appreciated the support, but to please stop singing so the other people inside could eat in peace."
As the fans apparently happily obliged, Gaga – dressed in "an amazingly insane black outfit" – joined a girlfriend at the bar to chat while sipping on a glass of wine.
Kirsten Dunst had a fun girls' night out at the Chateau Marmont with four friends – including celebrity deejay Samantha Ronson, who was recently spotted hanging out with Sofia Vergara in N.Y.C. The unlikely duo were getting along famously, laughing and telling stories like old friends.
All the ladies were sipping white wine, except Dunst who drank a red-colored drink, according to an onlooker.
Dunst and Ronson were smoking, too, and lighting each other's cigarettes at their table on the patio at the famed West Hollywood hotel.
Between cocktails, they were picking at some food and sharing laughter as they told stories. Says an onlooker: "They were having the best time – being quite fun and quite playful." According to the onlooker, the group stuck around past midnight just "laughing the night away and being very carefree."
Fergie and hubby Josh Duhamel were in great spirits Thursday night when they made their way to West Hollywood hotspot Chateau Marmont for a pal's birthday.
The pair, joined by a small group of friends, were involved in "enthusiastic group conversation" throughout the evening, an onlooker tells PEOPLE. "Fergie wore a big smile for much of the night. It was obvious she was having a really good time. Though the couple's PDA was at a minimum, it was clear the two were enjoying the company and the conversation."
About an hour after the festivities kicked off, a small dessert with a candle was brought over to the table, and Fergie and Josh joined their pals in singing "Happy Birthday" to their friend.
"With additional desserts arriving, Fergie and Josh joined in on trying each," the source says, adding that the gathering came to an end at around 11:30 p.m. with Duhamel putting his arm around his wife as the duo headed to the valet.
Lindsay Lohan was all dolled up on Tuesday night when she arrived to her usual table at Chateau Marmont in West Hollywood.
With sister Ali in tow, Lindsay sported a black dress, sky-high heels and a sparkly coat at her regular haunt when the gals arrived at around 11 p.m..
"Lindsay chain-smoked and typed on her phone," an onlooker tells PEOPLE. "She [later] moved tables to join a couple who were having wine. She began chatting with them and became more involved in the conversation."
Meanwhile, Lindsay wasn't the only Lohan puffing away.
"Ali was bouncing around tables and going to the bathroom and smoking outside by the valet," the source says. "She looked very thin and seemed to be acting much older than her actual age."
Charlize Theron took a break from new mommy duties on Thursday night to catch up with her pregnant pal Reese Witherspoon.
The Academy Award-winning actresses took in some girl talk over dinner at Chateau Marmont in West Hollywood, where the two "genuinely [appeared] to have fun with one another," an onlooker tells PEOPLE, adding that Theron sipped on wine, while expectant Witherspoon drank sparkling water.
Courteney Cox breezed onto the patio of West Hollywood's Chateau Marmont holding a martini and ready for a night out. The single actress and a male friend, who wore a suit, were escorted past hotel staff to a table far in the back of the patio. She wore a black and white striped maxi dress and a thick gold cuff.
They both had drinks in hand, according to an onlooker. Cox was smiling, the onlooker tells us, and pulled her hair up into a high ponytail as she enjoyed her evening at the hotel, sticking around past midnight.
It was a (typically) star-studded night at West Hollywood's Chateau Marmont.
Lindsay Lohan may have (mostly) been preoccupied with her cell phone during her evening out with friends – she was glued to it, constantly texting, as were her pals – but that didn't stop her entirely from taking notice of fellow celebs. The starlet jumped out of her chair and ran to give Emily Blunt a hug when she saw the British actress approaching. They shared some pleasant small talk – and smiles – before Blunt headed away with her friend.
Soon, though, Lohan had another visitor: Gerard Butler, who arrived on the patio after midnight and sauntered over to the garden bar near where Lindsay and her friends were seated. The two were laughing and telling jokes, and Butler kept his hands on both sides of her chair as he leaned in close to talk. She was soaking up the attention and even asked him to come closer so she could whisper in his ear.
Jennifer Aniston was in a bright, sunny mood while hanging out with boyfriend Justin Theroux at West Hollywood's Chateau Marmont, an onlooker tells us. The couple seemed "content and present with each other" even as they were hanging out with a big group of people in the back area of the hotel's patio.
Aniston was bundled up for the weather, sporting a black wool peacoat and black pants, while her actor beau was in a leather jacket and gray T-shirt.
Theroux also greeted fellow revelers on the patio, sharing a hug with fellow guests like Zac Efron, who was there to hang with some guy friends. But when it was time to go, he only had eyes for Aniston, and the two giggled together as they left. Says the observer: "She and Justin were beaming and seemed enamored of each other."
Also at the Chateau that night: Eva Longoria, who was celebrating her 37th birthday with friends; and an energetic Lindsay Lohan who arrived at the hotel after midnight with one guy and a blonde female friend.
Eva Longoria may have just split from boyfriend Eduardo Cruz, but that didn't keep her from enjoying a night with pals who came out to honor the Desperate Housewives starlet as she turned 37.
"She had a little celebratory birthday dinner," a source tells PEOPLE of Longoria's intimate, seven-person event Tuesday evening at Cut restaurant in Beverly Hills, that included BFF Mario Lopez and his fiancée Courtney Mazza, along with Kevin Connolly. "She had a great time and was really enjoying herself."
The next night, she made her way to West Hollywood hotspot Chateau Marmont, where she hung out on the patio and "looked stunning and picture-perfect" in a white fitted blazer, tall beige strappy heels and black skinny pants, according to an onlooker. "She appeared to be in an upbeat, cheery mood."
As for the breakup, the Longoria insider says she is "doing okay."
