Owen Wilson began his career as an undergrad in Austin, Texas, where he and roommate Wes Anderson cowrote the 1993 indie short Bottle Rocket, starring the comic actor and his brother Luke.

After moving to Hollywood, Wilson continued to collaborate with Anderson (Rushmore, The Royal Tenenbaums) between high-profile roles in Shanghai Noon and Wedding Crashers. His string of successful comedies cemented his place in Hollywood's "Frat Pack" with Will Ferrell, Ben Stiller and Vince Vaughn.

But in 2007, the funny man with his mop of blond hair and crooked nose, revealed a darker side when he attempted suicide shortly after his split from You, Me and Dupree costar Kate Hudson. Wilson has since bounced back, returning to work and tackling fatherhood with the birth of his son, Robert Ford Wilson, in January 2011.

Owen Wilson: Five Fun Facts

  1. The trademark bump in Owen Wilson's nose isn't natural. He broke it twice, once in a high school scuffle and the other time playing football with friends. "You know, probably my nose wouldn't have been that great even if it hadn't been broken," he told the Los Angeles Times in 2001.
  2. Owen Wilson earned the frequently cited nickname "Butterscotch Stallion" in 2005 after a reader of gossip website Defamer claimed the actor's "Easy Bake" tan and shaggy mane gave him such an appearance.
  3. For their 2005 blockbuster, Wedding Crashers, Owen Wilson and Vince Vaughn rehearsed improvisational lines over games of backgammon or Ping-Pong.
  4. Luke Wilson lived with Owen for a year, despite the fact that he owned his own place a mile away.
  5. Owen Wilson partially blames his mischievous streak on his father. "One of my earliest memories was my dad sneaking us into the state fair, saying he was with the Channel 4 news," he tells the Los Angeles Times. "It was pretty clear where we got this from."

Wilson majors in English at the University of Texas, where he initially has no plan to pursue acting. "I thought maybe I could write," he recalls to the Los Angeles Times. "If things worked out nice, maybe I could write some short stories or a novel, maybe go into advertising, writing little jingles and stuff." Wilson and Anderson generate buzz at the Sundance Film Festival with Bottle Rocket, a 13-minute short film written by the pair and starring Wilson and his brother Luke as wannabe criminals. The idea becomes a full-length feature and is sold to Columbia Pictures later that summer. The quirky comedy, which hits theatres in February 1996, isn't a critical success but does serve as the first film role for the brothers.
