PEOPLE critic Tom Gliatto thinks Haley could've stuck around if she'd sung her swan song as well as her encore ...

Episode 29

Haley Scarnato found herself alone on stage at the end of Wednesday night's American Idol, and that's probably a very lonely place to be. Then, after wiping away some tears at being the latest singer voted off, she strutted all around the stage and into the audience with a reprise of "Turn the Beat Around" that was much better than Tuesday's rattled, rushed version. In other words, the version she sang when she was leaving might have been good enough to have kept her from going. American Irony, you know?

Chris Richardson was a surprise name joining the bottom three this week, along with Haley and Phil Stacey, whose choice in caps probably has as much to do with his poor voting record as his vocals. The choices are starting to get tough. If you look at who's left, Phil is the only name that seems automatically slotted for the bottom. Other than, you know, what's his name – Sanjaya! The Comeback Kid!

For the next few weeks, the producers are going to try and generate jokey suspense over whether Sanjaya is finally out. On Wednesday, Ryan made him stand up, sit down, stand up, sit down while announcing the bottom three. I just wanted to cry out, "He's a teenager, you mean showbiz people, not a Hitchcock movie!"

The show was padded out to 60 minutes, with a strange documentary scene of Simon in effect being told by African children that he needs what on Seinfeld was called a "manziere."

Next week: country songs with Martina McBride.
