Wednesday's Idol: LaKisha Goes, Blake Stays

Episode 36
Just before Ryan Seacrest began to announce the night's results, the final four contestants clumped together onstage, refusing to separate. Well, it was a cute piece of stage business, but they couldn't stay that way all night – and they didn't. Just as the wise Simon Cowell anticipated, LaKisha Jones was the one voted off. She probably expected it: Earlier in the show, Seacrest caught her muttering to herself during a commercial break. What had she been saying? "Hopefully I'll remember the words," she told him, "and I don't want to cry."She did cry, briefly, but then she sang a big, sassy version of "Stayin' Alive," strolling through the studio audience.
LaKisha came with the sort of style and story Idol audiences love: A single mother originally from Michigan, she had a way of planting herself in front of the judges and unleashing an indomitable voice. But over the course of the Hollywood rounds, she never seemed to be enjoying herself. For all I know she may well have been gurgling with inner delight every single moment, including the kiss with Simon, but she didn't convey it. Instead she gave off a perplexing air of having to endure the experience ... with stardom being the light at the end of the tunnel. A tired diva. I'd rather have seen Blake "Beatbox" Lewis leave, but at least he's always determined to put on a good show.
Did Blake get to stay on because voters wanted to keep a guy in the mix? If so, that bodes well for his lasting into the final two a week from now. Blake vs. Jordin – how's that grab you?
