Shot mostly in HD in June at the Staples Center in Los Angeles and The Forum in nearby Inglewood, Calif., and pulled from at least 80 hours of footage, the movie captures the late singer on and off stage as he prepared for his 50 O2 Arena shows in London.
"He was a perfectionist on stage and through this unique film, audiences will be able to see, many for the first time, how much Michael poured into making his performances as special as they were perfect," says Rob Stringer, chairman of Sony Music Entertainment's Columbia/Epic Label Group.
The movie, of which proceeds will go to the Michael Jackson Family Trust, will also feature interviews with collaborators and close friends of the singer. Some sequences will be in 3-D.
Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Mitchell Beckloff approved the release of the rehearsal and backstage footage to Sony last Friday.
