How Prince William's Cousin Reacted to Marriage Proposal
That, at least, are the words of wisdom from Mike Tindall, the groom in the second big royal wedding of the year. He is set to wed Prince William's cousin Zara Phillips on July 30.
England rugby player Tindall, 32, who earlier this month enjoyed a raucous bachelor party in Miami, told the Mail on Sunday's Live magazine how he popped the question to Phillips, 30, at the couple's home in Cheltenham, Gloucestershire.
"She was on the sofa, so that made it easier," says Tindall, who was on bended knee. "She was completely in shock and when she stopped laughing, she said, 'Yes.' "
He confirms that the couple will not be having a honeymoon, as he and Zara, an equestrian, have commitments the following week.
As for their home life, the couple – two of their dogs are named Sway, for Angelina Jolie's character in Gone in 60 Seconds, and Storm, for Halle Berry's X-Men character – keep it low-key.
"Saturday night, on the sofa with the dogs, watching X-Men. That's pretty much what our life is like. Rock 'n' roll, baby," says the groom-to-be.
He adds that Zara's cousins, who are further up the order of succession than she is at No. 13, are just regular young men despite their position.
"You meet Prince Harry or Prince William in their own environment, where they feel secure, and they're normal people," he says. "[T]hey'll sit and talk to you normally, about everything that goes on. They have this persona outside, but inside you see they're a normal family."
