Bend the rules like Beckham?
Soccer star David Beckham wasn't on the official guest list for Friday night's reception to welcome Prince William and Catherine to the United States.
But as a friend bearing gifts (signed L.A. Galaxy jerseys for one of William's charities), Beckham breezed by security and chatted with the 29-year-old prince at the poolside mixer at the Los Angeles home of British Consul-General Barbara Hay.
Beckham, dressed in a black suit with a blue spotted tie, attended without his wife Victoria, who is due to give birth to their fourth child, a girl, at any moment.
"Victoria really wanted to come but she is just so tired at the moment," Beckham told William. "She sent you both lots of love."
"Don't be silly," William replied. "Send her all our love and tell her good luck with it all."
Beckham also asked William about the royal newlyweds' recent trip to Canada.
"It's been an amazing few days," said William. "We've been so lucky with all the incredible places we've been able to see and we've met so many fascinating people. It's been amazing, amazing."
