Even princesses aren't perfect.

As she stepped out at her first solo royal engagement at the Palace Wednesday night, the Duchess of Cambridge revealed another thing she has in common with her husband, Prince William: They both have scars on their heads from childhood.

Kate's scar was visible for the first time in pictures taken at the event she attended at Clarence House. Initially, it was suggested that the mark was proof that Kate – who dazzled in vintage Amanda Wakeley gown – had topped off her outfit with hair extensions. But the palace denied those reports.

"It is a scar from a childhood operation," a Palace spokesperson confirms to PEOPLE.

Palace sources would not elaborate on the details of the operation for privacy reasons.

When William was 13, he was left with a scar on his forehead after an accident with a golf club. In an interview conducted by a young cancer patient from the Royal Marsden hospital, for the BBC in 2009, William explained: "That was for my Harry Potter scar, as I call it, just here. I call it that because it glows sometimes and some people notice it – other times they don't notice it at all."
