Mark Shand, brother to the Duchess of Cornwall, was laid to rest during a private funeral service on Thursday afternoon.

Camilla, looking teary and distressed, was accompanied by Prince Charles, her sister Annabel Elliot and her two children as they were joined by 180 mourners at the Holy Trinity Church in Stourpaine, Dorset.

In a freak accident, Shand, a 62-year-old conservationist and travel writer, died unexpectedly after falling and hitting his head on a New York sidewalk last week.

Known for his dedication to protecting the endangered Asian elephant, Shand founded the Elephant Family charity in 2002. On the evening of his fall, he was celebrating one of the biggest fundraising events in the charity's history – having raised over $3 million with The Fabergé Big Egg Hunt event, which had just debuted in New York.

Amongst the mourners at the service was Shand's 19-year-old daughter Ayesha, who wore a multicolored dress and linked arms with her aunt, Annabel, who lives and works in the Dorset village.

Shand’s body was carried into the picturesque church in a biodegradable wicker coffin adorned with bright flower garlands.

In response to the many offers of support the charity received, is has set up The Mark Shand Memorial Fund to save the Asian elephant. The family asks that any gifts be sent via the fund set up in his name.
