First came the signature Chelsea blow dry. Then the bangs made their debut. And finally, the royal lob landed with an elegant bounce.
In an exclusive hair tutorial for PEOPLE.com, Princess Kate's longtime hairdresser, London superstylist Richard Ward, shares his techniques for achieving the royal mom's coveted cut – a glamorous but practical mid-length style.

"It's great for a restyle without being too dramatic," Ward tells PEOPLE. Plus, it's a practical option for a mom with two children under age 3 and requires far less maintenance.
"Longer hair is more prone to splitting and getting dry," says Ward. "You need to use more heat and styling equipment to keep the curl and bounce in place, because of the heaviness of the hair – thus drying the hair out and making it difficult to look healthy."

Ward, 49, who opened his eponymous salon in 1992, says he is frequently asked to recreate the style on clients of all ages with varying lifestyles because of its versatility.
As for those famous bangs? "The fringe has been hugely popular, as it suits most people and it's very feminine," he says.
