There are many fans of Glee who would love to see – and hear – more from charismatic bad boy Noah 'Puck' Puckerman. Well, those Gleeks will get their wish when Mark Salling releases his first CD, Pipe Dreams, on Oct. 26.
The actor, who's described his album as "old-school rock, a little bit of jazz, chord harmonies, and a little bit of folk," performed a short set Saturday at Hollywood's SIR Studios. Salling, 28, dressed in a black T-shirt, black jeans and with his Puck-brushed mohawk re-emerging, introduced his seven band mates to an audience of 35 friends and family. "It's very new," he said on stage, looking nervous but excited, "but I couldn't be happier with this group of people." He then launched into a diverse set.
The first number, called "The Fugitive," was an atmospheric opener and featured Salling on electric guitar, played with bagpipe and flute effects. "The next one is for the ladies," he teased, before singing the ballad "Musical Soulmate" with a string trio behind him. Among the lyrics: "I swear I want to sing to the world, no need to keep it a secret."
Sipping a Corona between songs, Salling joked, "You know, beer helps you play better. Why is that?" and added that the upcoming video for the song "Illusions" would reference the optic game Magic Eye. He and his band then tore into the song, a fast-paced rock tracks, packed with keyboard, saxophone, violin and guitar solos. At the end, Salling looked at his friend Peter, the violinist, and then asked the audience, "When's the last time you heard a violin solo with funk?"
The Glee star concluded the set with "The Descent (Confessions of a Ghost)," and thanked the crowd for coming and offered them to stay for more pizza and beer.
