Both swimmers struck gold in their final races in the London Games.
As part of the American 400M-medley relay team – which included Matt Grevers, Brendan Hansen and Nathan Adrian – Phelps scored the 22nd Olympic medal of his career. It was also his 18th gold medal.
The men finished the race, in which Phelps swam the butterfly leg, in 3 minutes 29.05 seconds, ahead of silver-medal winners Japan and bronze-medal winners Australia.
The American women – Missy Franklin, Rebecca Soni, Dana Vollmer and Allison Schmitt – also won gold in their 400M-medley relay, finishing with a world-record time of 3 minutes 52.05 seconds. This time Australia took silver and Japan took bronze.
"I couldn't think of a better way to end it. That was so perfect in absolutely every way," said Franklin, 17, who swam the backstroke leg. "That was the most fun relay I've ever been on."
"I'm going to miss this so much," added the swimmer, who won a total of four gold medals and one bronze in the Games. "I'm really excited that I get to spend a little time with my family and explore London a little bit ... But I'm so sad it's over."
