Jordan Spieth Forced to Put Green Jacket on Masters Winner Danny Willett After Shocking Loss

Jordan Spieth was forced to hand over the coveted Masters jacket on Sunday after a complete breakdown on the green cost him what seemed like a guaranteed victory.

Spieth, the 22-year-old Texas golfer who tied Tiger Woods' record in 2015 to win the Augusta, Georgia, tournament, fell to U.K. player Danny Willett after bogeying the 10th and 11th holes, and quadruple bogeying the 12th during his final round. The young star had been in the lead throughout the entire tournament, and was five shots ahead of Willett entering the last nine holes, according to the Golf Channel.

"A dream-come-true front nine," Spieth called his four straight birdies on Sunday, before the meltdown, reported ESPN.

After the collapse, Spieth was required – as is tradition – to outfit the victor in a Masters blazer and sit for interviews next to Willett. If he had won, Spieth would have been the youngest player in Masters history to take three majors, and the first back-to-back champion, according to ESPN.

"As you can imagine," Spieth told reporters, according to ESPN, "I can't think of anybody else who may have had a tougher ceremony to experience."

Willett's victory was his second momentous occasion in so many weeks: the 28-year-old and his wife welcomed their first child, Zachariah James, on March 30, reported the Golf Channel. The champion had initially planned to skip the tournament, as Zachariah's due date was originally Sunday.
