The actor, who starred in the film, fist-pumped his way to the stage, and even threw in a "f--- yeah," as he made his way to the stage to claim the trophy.
During his acceptance speech for the award, producer Michael Sugar called on the Catholic Church to put an end to scandals.
"This film gave a voice to survivors," he said. "As this Oscar amplifies that voice which we all will become a choir that will resonate all the way to the Vatican. Pope Francis, it's time to protect the children and restore the faith."
Spotlight also took home the award for best original screenplay.
