As a wise sage once asked: "Who run the world? Girls." "Squad" was not amended to this, but we could easily make the case that it should have been. The emergence of roving packs of hyper-glamorous, supportive groups of women banding together for fun, education and … I don't know, food, maybe … has been one of the prevailing trends of the past year of celebrity coverage.

Below, a quick guide to the prime players.

The Saturday Night Squad

Besides being hilarious, what do Tina Fey, Amy Poehler, Maya Rudolph and Kristen Wiig have in common? Friendship! Also, they helped make SNL less of a boys' club throughout the 1990s and early 2000s. And, like good alumni, they continue to hang out. Would that we could be a fly on the wall for those reunions. They're also inclusive – they brought Amy Schumer into the fold – and aware of how… somewhat ridiculous the hubbub surround "squads" is, hence the video above.

A squad so massive and so powerful that lesser squads are occasionally pulled into its orbit and absorbed. Membership swells and dwindles with the tides, but the constants are the trinity-completing Selena Gomez and Karlie Kloss, with Haim, Lorde and Lena Dunham as main support. Jamie King has been known to pop up, and there's usually a Hadid or two (give or take) in there as well.

Lena Dunham's membership in the SwiftSquad does not preclude the maintenance and deploying of her own squad, which is primarily composed of Girls castmates. And they have a deep history: Dunham went to grade school with Jemima Kirke.

Being one of a family of five is a pretty good jumpstart on a squad. Claiming both actual sisterhood and the shared experience of growing up on television and really, never actually leaving the spotlight forges a fairly unbreakable bond, which is why, despite the drama that might swirl around an individual KarJenner, they all keep it close.

It's a small but potent squad, comprising not one but two eminently relatable and beautiful Hollywood starlet and a powerhouse pop vocalist who's probably soundtracked most of the crying jags of the past five years. Lawrence occasionally pulls Schumer into the squad as well, though that's more of a one-on-one thing.

Cara Delevingne's cheekbones have acted as homing beacons for some of the most equally striking young things (Kendall Jenner, Rita Ora, Rihanna, Suki Waterhouse) in the world of Young Famous. But every squad needs a den mother, and that's where spiritual model sire to the young 'uns, Kate Moss, comes in.

Diaz's squad is sort of a retinue of high-powered '90s blondes, with Reese Witherspoon, Drew Barrymore and Jennifer Aniston. Leslie Mann occasionally makes an appearance, as does the group's shared makeup artist, Gucci Westman.

Beyonc-Squad
When your squad includes Jay Z (by virtue of being married to him), Coldplay (by virtue of being friends with the lead singer's consciously-uncoupled wife), unwavering beam of vegan-friendly blonde light Gwyneth Paltrow (the aforementioned wife) as well as the original PowerChild, Blue Ivy – sorry, Nori – you have attained perfection. Solange can come too.

They've gotta mature a little – like a fine wine, but don't count out the squad of Willow Smith, Kiernan Shipka, Tavi Gevinson, Amandla Stenberg and Lauren Turk, especially when it swells to include Lorde within their ranks. They've got crystal friendship bracelets, people!
