Soon after Twilight's popularity reached a peak, The CW debuted The Vampire Diaries in 2009, and the show wasted no time in acknowledging the series that paved its way. In one of its earliest episodes, vamp bad boy Damon, played by Ian Somerhalder, flips through a copy of New Moon, and muses to his human girlfriend, "What's so special about this Bella girl? Edward's so whipped." When she asks why he, too, doesn't sparkle, Damon doesn't miss a beat, responding, "Because I live in the real world, where vampires burn in the sun … This book, by the way, has it all wrong."
