They had everybody talking during their major red carpet entrance. But Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie seemed unable to keep their eyes off each other at the Screen Actors Guild Awards on Sunday.

Stealing kisses at their table or just romantic glances, the twosome stuck close inside the Shrine Auditorium, with the TV cameras checking in on them often. But the lovebirds soaked up the affection from at least one other person. Mickey Rooney approached the two at their table before the show, gabbed for a bit and posed for a picture. Daniel Day-Lewis Dedicates Award to Heath Ledger

While accepting his award as outstanding male actor in a leading role – for There Will Be Blood – Daniel Day-Lewis gave a moving tribute to Heath Ledger, who was also honored in the annual "In Memoriam" montage.

Recalling several of Ledger's most iconic roles, Day-Lewis called the late actor an inspiration and "unique," before dedicating the trophy to Ledger.

"Of course, in Brokeback Mountain he was unique," Day-Lewis said. "He was perfect. And that scene in the trailer at the end of the film is as moving as anything I have ever seen."

Asked backstage why he'd decided to dedicate the award to Ledger, he said, "I suppose that's all I've been thinking about for the last few days. I never met him. I thought he was beautiful. I just have a very strong feeling that I would have liked him very much as a man. ...I admired him very much." (See a list of the winners.)

Backstage at the Screen Actors Guild Awards on Sunday Steve Carell (whose The Office won for best ensemble comedy) joked about his sticky relationship with Ricky Gervais – who starred in the British version of The Office.

"[He's] very scary. He's a very intimidating human being and none of us like him very much, and he doesn't like us either," cracked Carell, who was surrounded by the rest of his show's cast. "There's an awkwardness. You can cut the tension with a knife."

Added Carrell, "I actually saw Ricky in the men's room just before the ceremony, and I swear to god, he leaned over the urinal and said: 'I knew it!'"

Kate Beckinsale usually saves her drama for the big screen – but on Sunday she had her share of it at home.

"Our cat [Clive] caught fire on a candle," the actress laughed on the red carpet at the Screen Actors Guild Awards. "As I was getting ready, there was like 'whoosh' a fireball and he went up like a rocket."

But not to worry, says Beckinsale, who came to the award show with her husband, director Len Wiseman. "[The cat] is fine. He had no idea," she said.

However, the smell of burnt fur in the house was another matter. "It was awful," she told PEOPLE.

The Sopranos may be off the air but the Mob clan still rules with an iron fist – at least at Sunday's Screen Actors Guild Awards from Los Angeles's Shrine Auditorium.

"This was so not supposed to happen," quipped Sopranos leading lady Edie Falco, who was honored as outstanding female actor in a drama series. (See a list of the winners.)

Also picking up an award early in the ceremony was her costar James Gandolfini, the first winner of the night, as outstanding male actor in a drama series. Said Gandolfini as he accepted his "Actor" statuette: "This is the last official act as Sopranos, together," a nod to the fact that the HBO show wound down in June 2007 after six seasons.
