Daniel Day-Lewis Takes Home BAFTA Award
Originally posted 02/10/2008 09:40PM
Daniel Day-Lewis did more than scoop up yet another award for best actor
on Sunday night: he earned a little street cred from his kids.
"I don't know what my lads are going to think of this," the
father of three said holding up his BAFTA award, Britain's answer to
the Oscar, "but when they see me in a photograph with Daniel Radcliffe
they are going to take me really seriously."
The admiration between the two Daniels appeared mutual. The Harry
Potter star told PEOPLE that of all the celebrities milling about the
Royal Opera House in London's Covent Garden – including Kate Hudson,
Jessica Biel, Emily Blunt, Sylvester Stallone, and more – Day-Lewis was the star he was most eager to meet. "I do think that he's sort of incredible," Radcliffe said.

Hey, Hollywood: Feeling the need to rock a red carpet? Hop a flight to London.
With the lingering writers' strike casting a cloud of uncertainty over next month's Oscars, Britain's BAFTA Awards could provide many actors with the only international platform to strut their stuff.
So perhaps it's no surprise that a clutch of heavy-hitters are expected to grace the glamorous Feb. 10 event.

Lindsay Lohan landed her first nominations of the 2008 awards season Monday. But it's probably best to leave this one off the résumé.
The 21-year-old actress was recognized by the Razzies – the annual awards show recognizing the year's "worst" films and performances – for her part in the thriller I Know Who Killed Me. In fact, she earned two nominations for a single role.

George Clooney Plays Director at Awards Show
Originally posted 01/16/2008 01:25PM
George Clooney may have taken direction from the filmmaking Coen Brothers in the past – for 2000's O Brother, Where Art Thou? and 2003's Intentional Cruelty – but at Monday night's National Board of Review awards dinner in New York, it was clearly a case of role reversal.
On hand to pick up his best actor award from the group for Michael Clayton, PEOPLE's former Sexiest Man Alive – with girlfriend Sara Larson – also presented Joel and Ethan Coen the top prize, for the board's best picture of the year, No Country for Old Men.
"They can do anything," Clooney, 46, said of director Joel, 53, and writer, Ethan, 50. Summarizing their filmography and the audience to whom their movies appeal, Clooney said, "For stoners, there's The Big Lebowski ... for funny, there's Raising Arizona."

Critics Honor Amy Ryan, Daniel Day-Lewis
Originally posted 01/13/2008 02:20PM
There may be no Golden Globes show, but that didn't stop the L.A. Film Critics from handing out awards Saturday – and drawing stars.
The best picture honor went to There Will Be Blood, best actor to the film's star Daniel Day-Lewis, best actress to French actress (and La Vie en Rose star) Marion Cotillard and supporting actress to Gone Baby Gone's Amy Ryan.
The awards marked a rare appearance by the enigmatic Day-Lewis, who says he felt out of place amid the Hollywood glamour.
"It's a little shocking," Day-Lewis, 50, told PEOPLE. "It's a very different environment than the one to which I live in everyday."

Joaquin Phoenix: Grateful But Speechless for People's Choice Award
Originally posted 01/09/2008 11:45AM
Joaquin Phoenix may have been named favorite leading man during Tuesday's People's Choice Awards, but the actor wasn't feeling too chatty about the honor. Sure, he was grateful. But in his taped acceptance speech, Phoenix nodded to the ongoing writers' strike – which forced producers to retool the show – by using cards to broadcast his message. "I'm speechless without the writers," his cards read. "Seriously. But in my own quiet way, I want to thank the millions of fans that voted for me for favorite leading man." The actor then mumbled a quick "thank you" at the end of his printed message.

Rainn Wilson to Host Independent Spirit Awards
Originally posted 12/21/2007 12:55PM
Another awards show will go on, despite the writers' strike. The Office star Rainn Wilson will host Film Independent's annual Independent Spirit Awards honoring indie films.
The writers' union granted a waiver to the show, which will air live on the Independent Film Channel Feb. 23. Wilson, a Writers Guild of America member, will contribute to the writing on the program.
"The Spirit Awards and Film Independent have a long-standing, positive relationship with the Writers Guild," Film Independent executive director Dawn Hudson said, according to the Hollywood Reporter. "We've worked over many, many years to have parity for writers as they're represented on our show."
The WGA rejected requests for similar waivers from organizers of the Golden Globes and Academy Awards, both of which may be impacted if the strike is not resolved. The Jan. 8 People's Choice Awards was forced to change formats due to the strike.

People's Choice Awards Abandons Red Carpet
Originally posted 12/19/2007 07:45PM
The People's Choice Awards has become the first awards show hit by the writers' strike, with producers abandoning the red carpet, acceptance speeches and live audience for a "magazine-style format."
Queen Latifah will continue to serve as host of the show, but winners now will give their acceptance remarks via video rather than from a stage in an auditorium. Winners will also answer questions emailed by fans.
"Obviously, we realized there are pressing issues facing the entertainment industry," says show spokeswoman Jeannie Tharrington. "Out of respect for all the people involved, we decided we would use this opportunity to use a new format."
The People's Choice Awards airs on Jan. 8 on CBS.
