Eight-time nominee
Mary J. Blige, who collected her award for best R&B album for
The Breakthrough earlier in the evening, got teary during her acceptance speech. "This is the first time I've ever been up here to receive anything," she said. "I'm growing into a better human being and I thank you so much. Tonight we celebrate ... because for so many years I've been talked about negatively." Blige, who continued on her winning streak, also picked up the best female R&B vocal performance trophy.
In a slight upset,
John Mayer won for best pop vocal album – an award that many expected
Justin Timberlake to win. "I just got done playing – I'm nervous," said Mayer, accepting the trophy mere moments after performing with John Legend and Corinne Bailey Rae.
