Prince Harry: Snapshot

Prince Harry
Date of Birth
September 15, 1984
Birth Place
London, England
His brother, Prince William, may be Britain's next king, but it's Princess Diana's flamed-haired second son, Prince Harry, who has become the spice that keeps the Royal Family juicy.

As a teenage bad boy, Harry made headlines when he was caught with marijuana, accused of cheating, and donned a Nazi costume. However, the rule-breaking prince, who is exhaustively compared to his brother (i.e. Dutiful William vs. Dirty Harry), has displayed a growing maturity. He made a documentary on AIDS orphans in Africa, embarked on a military career with Britain's Army and fought on the frontline in Afghanistan.

The prince, who was just 12 when his mother died, marked the 10-year anniversary of her death with a heartfelt speech and tribute concert on what would have been Princess Diana's 46th birthday. Four years later, Harry stood at his brother's side as he wed Catherine Middleton at Westminster Abbey.

Prince Harry found love in Cressida Bonas and the two dated for nearly two years before they broke up. Harry has been spending 2014 showing his support for multiple charities.

  2. At a benefit concert in 1987, Lionel Richie gave Princess Diana a pair of brown leather jackets for Prince Harry and Prince William. "How wonderful," Diana said of the gifts bearing her sons' names in colored lettering.
  3. When Prince William was seven, he told Princess Diana that he wanted to be a policeman so he could look after her, according to Vanity Fair. But five-year-old Prince Harry responded, "Oh, no you can't. You've got to be King!"
  4. After pairing a lavender pin-striped tie with a dark suit for Prince Philip's 80th birthday, Prince Harry was named a Best-Dressed Brit in 2001.
  5. During a 2007 interview, Matt Lauer read a list of adjectives describing how Americans viewed Prince William, including ''dutiful.'' But Prince Harry shot back sarcastically, "Is that 'dutiful' or 'beautiful'?"

Saying Farewell

The Queen breaks precedent to give Diana a royal funeral because she is the mother of the future king. William, 15, and Harry, 12, walk behind their mother's coffin, while more than a million people line the route. Diana's brother, Earl Spencer, uses his eulogy to criticize the media's hounding of his sister, while Elton John sings a reworked version of his hit "Candle in the Wind."

Harry's Gap Year

After turning 18, the British media ramps up its coverage of Harry, who graduates from Eton. During his gap year, Harry parties in London, ranches in Australia and, for two months, works with AIDS orphans in Africa. While there, he makes the documentary, The Forgotten Kingdom. "I want to carry on the things that she (Princess Diana) didn't quite finish. I have always wanted to, but was too young," Harry tells the British Press Association.
