4. HOUSE ARREST
Responding to a report of a disorderly person, officers arrest Bynes on May 23 for reckless endangerment at her New York apartment amid reports that she threw a bong out the window. The actress undergoes a psych evaluation before being processed at a police station, where she is also charged with marijuana possession and tampering with evidence. "It's all lies," she Tweets days later, accusing the NYPD of sexual harassment and threatening to sue. "I think Amanda's fine," her lawyer, Richard Hutton, tells PEOPLE. "Every time I've talked to her, I've had nice, attorney-client normal relations with her." For her first court appearance on July 9, Bynes shows up sporting a blue wig.
3. NEW LOOK, NEW 'TUDE
Having stayed under the radar for nearly a year, Bynes reemerges sporting a dramatic new look in March 2013, Tweeting a photo of her facial piercings, heavy makeup and longer locks. It is the start of her erratic Twitter behavior, in which she repeatedly posts photos of herself scantily clad or topless, confesses her desire for plastic surgery and trashes everyone from rapper Drake to the President to the media outlets reporting on her antics. In addition, Bynes is often spotted wandering aimlessly around New York City in wigs and outlandish clothing.
2. WHEELY IN TROUBLE
In 2012, Bynes raises eyebrows when she is arrested for driving under the influence after colliding with a police car on April 6. After being released, she continues getting into further mishaps, holding up traffic and sideswiping a pickup truck. She is officially charged with a DUI in June and two counts of hit-and-run follow in September. Her driver's license is soon suspended, but Bynes again gets behind the wheel, leading to further charges. When reached by PEOPLE, the actress says, "I am doing amazing … I don't drink, and I don't drink and drive. It is all false."
1. ACTING OUT
After fronting teen comedies like 2006's She's the Man and 2007's Sydney White, Amanda Bynes declares on Twitter in June 2010 that she's leaving Hollywood behind. "Being an actress isn't as fun as it may seem," she writes. "I know 24 is a young age to retire ... I've never written the movies and tv shows I've been a part of. I've only acted like the characters the producers or directors wanted me to play." One month later, she recants her statement and shares a link to the trailer for her new film, Easy A.
Then: In 1996, Bynes joined the cast of Nickelodeon's sketch comedy show All That, eventually nabbing her own starring gig, The Amanda Show, in 1999.
Now: Bynes announced that she was retiring from acting on Twitter but has since been acting out, racking up a slew of legal troubles amid a drastic makeover (cheek piercings and wigs!) and reports of increasingly bizarre behavior. Still, she insists, "I'm doing amazing" – and then she Tweets something like this.

2011: AMANDA'S FUNKY FOOTWEAR
Right now Amanda Bynes has bigger problems to worry about than what she wears on her feet, but last year her major blunder had to be these shoes. The clunky, aqua fringed Christian Louboutin peep-toe platforms got tons of attention – and that wasn't a good thing.
"I dressed up as a bride because I loved pretending to be a housewife," says the actress of the getup she wore at age 9. "Now that I look back on it, I think I was a bit young to get married!"

He's been nominated for an Academy Award and a Golden Globe – this Canadian actor needs a leading lady to be his "plus one" at all these star-studded events.
Whom Should He Date?
Rachel McAdams, 31: Their split drew more tears than their work in The Notebook. The fellow Canucks could star in a real-life sequel.
Kirsten Dunst, 25: He's fallen in love on the set before. Could Gosling make a romantic connection with his costar in the upcoming All Good Things?
Amanda Bynes, 21: They've got a lot in common: Both were child stars who've avoided scandal (he got his start with Disney; she on Nickelodeon).
