Tiger Woods was swinging a club even before he could walk. So with the guidance of his late father, Earl, the young prodigy became the youngest-ever – and first black – Masters champion at age 21.

But Woods's carefully cultivated image as an invincible golf phenom and family man all came crashing down in 2009, when a late-night car accident exposed a pile-up of mistresses and a secret double life.

Before his highly publicized fall from grace, the California child prodigy and richest athlete of all time was on his way to golf legend status, with 14 major championships to his name, just four shy of all-time great Jack Nicklaus.

In 2010, Woods – who publicly apologized to wife Elin Nordegren and their two children, daughter Sam and son Charlie – returned to the green, with his lucrative Nike contract in tact, but the state of his marriage "irretrievably broken." After months of speculation, the couple finalize their divorce, issuing a joint statement saying, "We are sad that our marriage is over and we wish each other the very best for the future." After wading back into the world of golf, Woods also returns to the dating scene in 2013, embarking on a relationship with Olympic skier Lindsey Vonn.

Late 1970s: Cub Scouting
After wee tot Tiger emulates his father’s swing in the family's garage, Earl Woods begins training his 10-month-old son to play golf. "He walked over, got his little putter, set up, waggled just like I did and hit the ball," Earl recalls. In 1978, the young prodigy makes an impressive turn on The Mike Douglas Show, where he outputts Bob Hope.
1990: Tiger on the Prowl
By age 14, Woods smashes the junior amateur circuit, racking up five age-group world titles. "I'm not out just to be the best black player," Woods tells PEOPLE. "I want to be the best golfer ever." Two years later, the high school sophomore (and reigning U.S. Junior Amateur champion) tees off at the Nissan Los Angeles Open, becoming the youngest golfer ever to play in a PGA Tour event.
1994: Fall
Stanford Calls
After being heavily recruited, Woods matriculates at Stanford University on a golf scholarship, majoring in economics. After winning the NCAA Championship, Woods opts to leave Stanford after just two years to pursue golf professionally.
