The top 12 performed songs by divas the night before – and then faced a night of diva-worthy drama on Thursday's show. And it was a particularly tough night for the young adults' coach, Demi Lovato, after the outcome of the viewers' votes were revealed.

Simon Cowell and Demi Lovato sparred on The X Factor in between Wednesday night's performances. But during Thursday's results show, Simon got to show off his star-making muscles when the winners of the U.K. version of The X Factor, superstar boy band One Direction, performed in front of screaming fans.
But the real business of the night was to announce the top 12 and to send home one act. The results, for the first time, were based on viewers' votes. Another first: at the end of the show, hosts Mario Lopez and Khloé Kardashian announced how the contestants ranked in terms of who earned the most and least number of votes. And you might be surprised.

The X Factor's top 13 contestants (welcome back, Diamond White!) performed songs from movies Thursday night – hoping to earn viewers' votes for the first time this season – but most of the drama came from Demi Lovato and Simon Cowell.
The two clashed almost right away after Paige Thomas's highly theatrical performance of "Take My Breath Away."
"The beginning was great but I think it needed to go somewhere ... You don't want to turn this into a karaoke competition," Simon told Thomas's mentor. "Madame," he continued, referring to Demi, "could have used a little more imagination in terms of the production of the song."
"I'm so sorry I let you down," Demi said sarcastically. "You did so amazing. It was so beautiful." Then to Simon she added, "Obviously everybody in the audience disagrees with you."

When Demi Lovato landed a coveted gig as a judge on The X Factor, she didn't know what to expect from her fellow panelist, Britney Spears.
But now Lovato can say that it's "really cool to hang out with" the pop superstar.
"What surprised me the most about Britney is that she's actually really quirky," Lovato, 20, told PEOPLE of Spears, 30, at a party for the season 2 finalists at the SLS Hotel in Beverly Hills on Monday.
"You kind of expect a legendary pop star [to] sometimes [be], like, a diva or something, but she's really not. She's a sweet, down-to-earth, Southern girl."

Hours before her big debut Wednesday as co-host of The X Factor, Khloé Kardashian wasn't thinking about X so much as "Why?"
Nerves took over, and suddenly she was freaking out – big time. Then came the show. And afterwards, came advice.
"My sisters have already texted me tips, which I love," Kardashian, 28, told reporters after Thursday's show. "I love constructive criticism. I've never done this before, so I just think I can only get better – hopefully."

After performing live for the first time on Wednesday, four of The X Factor's top 16 were eliminated by the celebrity mentors who prepared them for their big night.
With new hosts Khloé Kardashian Odom and Mario Lopez at the helm once again Thursday, each of the four judges – Britney Spears, Demi Lovato, Simon Cowell and L.A. Reid – had to pick two contestants to put into the top 12 and two to sing for survival.

Wednesday night marked the first live broadcast of The X Factor's season 2 – and the anticipated debut of new hosts Khloé Kardashian Odom and Mario Lopez.
It was also a chance to see how the first-time judges, a "nervous" Britney Spears and Demi Lovato, would do on live TV, when anything can happen.

It's a big night for Brit!
Wednesday is the long-awaited first live show of Fox's The X Factor (8 p.m. ET), and Britney Spears, 30, has mixed emotions about the experience.
"I am a little nervous," the pop star told Extra's Terri Seymour. "But I'm excited. I'm really, really excited. I can't wait."

The X Factor judge Demi Lovato says being on television is both a "blessing and a curse," but the exposure has allowed her to use her celebrity to help others who have battled problems such as anorexia, bulimia and bipolar disorder.
"Just as much as it sucks to have tabloids writing about you, at the same time I had all these issues and I was able to raise awareness because I came out publicly with those issues and then I have tons of fans that come up and tell me, 'Oh, I got help with my eating disorder or this because you came out and said it,' " Lovato, 20, recently said at the Billboard/THR Film & TV Music Conference.

Britney Spears's sons don't see their mom as a superstar. They do, however, think she has super powers.
"They try to figure out where I go when I go to film X Factor. They're like, 'Mommy's going off to be a superhero.' And then I get back, and they just see me as Mommy," Spears, 30, tells Lucky magazine in its December cover story of her boys Preston, 7, and Jayden, 6.
"And then when I'm back working on the show, they say, 'Oh, Mommy's a superhero again!' "
As for the other man in the pop star's life, her fiancé Jason Trawick, Spears says he also doesn't mind seeing her without her "cape" on.
